Last year, a group of residents at Desert Gold RV Resort in Brenda decided to present, to the local public, a different type of entertainment. Brenda is a very small town located about 12 miles east of Quartzsite, Exit 31 off Interstate 10. Quartzsite, dubbed the “Meeting Place” is host to hundreds of thousands of RVers who arrive in the winter months each year and camp on the desert or at the numerous RV Parks in the area. Quartzite, dubbed “The Meeting Place,” is famous for its huge swap meets, as well as western, gospel and blue grass jams. Broadway Music was pretty much ignored. Desert Gold residents, Barbara Barns and Allen Hardin, joined forces to change that and co-produced “Let’s Do Broadway,” performed on the stage in the large rec. room at Desert Gold. Local residents were encouraged to participate with the understanding that they must be in full costume with a polished song from a Broadway Musical. The idea caught fire and the first show was a huge success. All seats were sold-out a few days before the performance, resulting in many being turned away at the door.
This year, the enthusiasm of cast and crew is up several more notches. An upgraded sound system was installed in the summer at Desert Gold and new sets are in the making. Supporting volunteers are busily working on costumes, publicity and ticket sales. Performers are in rehearsals, polishing their acts. The audience will be treated to selections from Oklahoma, South Pacific, The Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story and other memorable Broadway musicals. Because of the resounding success of last year’s presentation, “The Desert Community Players” will be doing two shows this year. All seats are reserved with ticket sales beginning on Jan. 23rd. Early purchase of tickets is advised as another sell-out is expected. Seats will be sold at the door if available.
